The Art of Cuphead
by Studio MDHR
My rating: ★★★★★
I play video games, but I’m not an avid gamer, so I was very late discovering Cuphead. I saw the preview for it a long time ago and thought “that looks nice” but then it dropped off the radar. A few weeks back, I saw the cover of NOW Toronto that they have illustrated and learned that they were Toronto based. That was the last push I was missing to purchase it.
Fast forward to about two months later, I’ve been really enjoying the game and just hit 200% done. I wish I could put that on my resume as an example of perseverance and hard-work.
Anyway, during the gameplay, you really get to experience and appreciate all the details that come from creating this game using mostly analog tools. So when I discovered that there was a book available with some behind-the-scenes I really wanted to have it.
It’s a very nice art book. I say that with the caveat that I didn’t find the text very groundbreaking (the information is a bit more “simple” than what I would’ve wanted), but that wasn’t the reason for buying it. The sketches and breakdown of characters, backgrounds and other details are amazing and it even inspired me to make an illustration based on it.
